Is there a difference between working in private property and working in the public road reserve?
As a general rule, services laid in private property are the responsibility of the property owner (e.g. the power cable that connects your house to the street). Services that run in the road reserve (i.e. under the grass berm, the footpath, kerb, or carriageway itself) generally belong to the network utility companies or to the relevant local council or authority. Utility companies usually retain plans showing the location of their networks, and sometimes provide a location service to mark out where their network runs in the street. We recommend utilising the website www.beforeudig.co.nz to obtain service plans prior to undertaking any projects, or alternatively contact Fife Ltd and we can discuss this with you further.
